Small Island | The Music - Composing for the Stage | National Theatre
'It's basically the story of my family.' Small Island's composer Benjamin Kwasi Burrell was inspired by Jamaican mento music to build a world of instrumentation, orchestration and sound. This behind the scenes video features his insight, as well as Associate Musical Director Shiloh Coke singing and playing the banjo, and musicians from the play. Andrea Levy's Small Island traces the interwoven and troubled histories between Jamaica and the UK, from WWII through to 1948, as its three main characters long for a better life. The 'dazzling’ ★★★★★ (Observer) production was filmed live during its sold-out run in 2019 and features a company of 40 actors, including Leah Harvey, Gershwyn Eustache Jr and Aisling Loftus. Small Island was streamed for free with National Theatre at Home from 7pm UK time on Thursday 18 June, until 7pm UK time on Thursday 25 June 2020.
